Mühle-Glashütte recently announced the launch of a new timepiece to commemorate 150 years of service by the German Maritime Service and Rescue Service (DGzRS). Since 1865 the German Maritime Service and Rescue Service has saved the lives of nearly 82,00 people. In 2002, Mühle-Glasshütte in cooperation with the crews of DGzRS rescue boats developed a watch to meet the needs of these nautical lifesavers. From that partnership, the S.A.R. Rescue TImer was born. The original S.A.R. Rescue Timer was an all around nautical tool watch with 1000m water resistance, and a 4mm thick sapphire crystal among other useful features. For more information on the original check out the Worn & Wound review done a few years ago.
On this special edition model, Mühle-Glasshütte has taken it a step further. The symbol of the sea rescuers, the Hanseatic Cross is clearly displayed at the 6 o’clock position in addition to another display window. Wearers will thank Mühle Glasshütte for going the extra mile with the additional display window which is far from standard. This added touch is a practical homage to the DGzRS. The window shows useful information for each day of the week: “founded in 1865”, “150 years in action”, “81.684 people rescued”, “2183 operations in 2014”, the emergency number of the DGzRS “0421536870”, the homepage “seenotretter.de” as well as the quotation “Klar P3!”. For some, the added display window may take away from the overall design aesthetics of the watch but I would argue that the person who is truly concerned with the symmetry of the dial would not purchase such a utilitarian timepiece.
Other important features of this watch include a double shock protected automatic movement and a rubber bezel. I simply could go on and on about this watch but I won’t bore you with my praise of such a cool timepiece. It isn’t often that special edition tool watches are announced especially from famed German brands such as Mühle-Glasshütte. For those interested, this timepiece is exclusively available through the DGzRS shop and all proceeds directly fund the DGzRS rescue teams. Let’s ensure that these brave men and women will have another 150 years to save valuable lives.
Also this announcement comes as a number of German watch brands hit the road here in the U.S. with the WatchBuys roadshow. Sinn, Hanhart, and Nomos are just a few of the brands that will be featured during this cross country tour. If you really appreciate German watchmaking this roadshow is definitely for you!
